Different types of brewing tanks in a brewery

Different types of brewing tanks in a brewery

Brewing tanks in a brewery are pieces of equipment used to carry out the beer brewing process. These tanks are usually made of stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials to prevent reactions with the yeast, malt, hops, and other ingredients used in the brewing process. The size and number of brewing tanks depend on the size and production needs of the brewery, and there are generally tanks of different capacities for different stages of brewing. To give you a better idea of your options, Micet has created a guide to the different types of brewing tanks.

Fermenters

Mash tun

A mash tun is a vessel used to make wort when brewing beer: a mash tun of malt and water. Not only does the saccharification barrel mix the ingredients into a mixture with a porridge-like consistency, but it also regulates the temperature of the mixture. This is important because if the temperature is too low, the mixture becomes thin and soft. If the temperature is too high, the wort will have difficulty interacting with the yeast during the subsequent process.

Sugar barrels, like all brewing equipment, should be sanitized before each use. This is because harmful bacteria can thrive in the residue from previous batches.

Fermenters

A fermenter is a vessel used to hold wort and yeast during the beer production process. Fermenters, also known as fermentation vessels, come in many different shapes and materials. Fermenters are a must for anyone interested in brewing beer, making wine, or fermenting other beverages or foods. They provide a controlled environment in which yeast can convert sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide to produce the desired end product.

Types of fermenters:

  • Open fermenters: a simple vessel with no lid or seal, they are the most basic type of fermenter. They are typically used for fermenting wine because they are easy to access and manually press down the lid (the layer of grape skins and seeds that rise to the surface during fermentation).
  • Closed fermenters: have a sealed lid that prevents any external contaminants from entering the fermentation process. They are usually used for brewing beer because they protect the liquid from the air, which can lead to spoilage or off-flavors.
  • Variable Volume Fermenters: have a floating lid and adjustable capacity, making them suitable for fermenting different amounts of liquid. They are popular among home brewers and small-scale brewers because they are flexible and help minimize the amount of air that comes in contact with the fermenting liquid.

Bright Tank

The Bright Tank features a very simple cylindrical design with a flat bottom. Perfect for storing beer as it matures. The perfect level of carbonation can turn an average beer into an excellent one. For this reason, you need to carefully control the carbonation level of your beer if you want to brew the best possible finished product. Bright tanks are a key component in the brewing process, producing just the right amount of carbonation and keeping it there for a long time. The bright tank will be one of the final storage points before the beer is bottled or served.

Mixing tank

Many industries, including brewing, kombucha, coffee, and food processing, require a storage vessel that can mix ingredients. The beer industry is a growing industry with a wide variety of products that attract a large number of consumers. Mixing tanks are used to mix different ingredients. Mixing tanks can be made of a variety of materials, but the most popular is stainless steel: hard, durable, strong, and beautiful. Stainless steel has a smooth surface that is easy to clean and sanitize, and this material also provides durability, strength, and convenience. The role of a mixing tank in manufacturing and production is to mix a large number of ingredients. Mixing tanks are used in the beer and mash mixing stage of a brewery.

Storage tank

Storage tanks are used to store mature beer waiting to be bottled or kegged. These tanks are usually larger than fermentation tanks and maturation tanks because they need to have enough capacity to hold large quantities of beer. Storage tanks will also usually have insulation systems to maintain the quality and flavor of the beer.

Cleaning Tanks

Purge tanks are used to clean and sanitize other brewing equipment and piping. These tanks are often equipped with detergents and hot water systems to ensure sanitation and cleanliness of the equipment.

Summary

Different types of tanks play a key role in a brewery and they ensure quality as well as hygiene during the production of beer. It is because these different types of brewing tanks work in tandem with each other in a brewery to ensure that the beer production process runs smoothly and produces a high-quality finished product.
