Brewing in Bags (BIAB) is the easiest and most cheap way for extract brewers to venture into whole grain brewing. What’s unique about this method is that you can do with one jug what traditional whole grain brewers do with three separate and distinct vessels. With a large brew jug and the help of an inexpensive grain bag, you have the equipment you need to brew your first whole grain masterpiece.

What is bagged beer?

Brew In A Bag, or abbreviated BIAB, is an easy method of home brewing. Whole grain brewing can be achieved without adding much new equipment or increasing brewing time in the home brewery. Smaller three-gallon batches can be processed on the stovetop using a strainer or colander, or full five-gallon batches can be processed outdoors using a pulley system to help lift the grain bag for drainage.

Why brew BIAB?

  • Want to do whole grain brewing at a lower cost
  • You don’t have enough room for the extra containers needed for a complete whole-grain setup
  • You want more control over your ingredients from the start
  • You don’t want to clean more equipment than extract brew

Disadvantages of Whole Grain Brewing

  1. A larger jug is required to brew the extract to achieve the standard 5-gallon batch.
  2. The kettle needs a valve to move the cooled wort into the fermenter.
  3. Making your wort takes more time than opening several containers of extract. The brew day will add about another three hours.
  4. Your precooking may be less efficient than with traditional whole-grain brewing. Extract brewers don’t calculate precook efficiency because their process doesn’t start with the grain.

Equipment needed for brewing in bags

Kettle/Boiler: It can be used as a mash tun or as a vessel for boiling wort.

Filter Bag: This is of course the bag part of the bagged beer. Most , these bags are made of a strong nylon mesh that is tight enough to keep grains from escaping the bag, but loose enough to allow liquids to pass through the material.

Efficiency in bagged brewing

Since BIAB beer is not sprayed, it will be less efficient than using a mash tun and spraying the grain. It’s hard to put an exact number on the efficiency you’ll get, but a good one is around 65-70%, and a typical whole grain batch is around 70-80%. One way bag brewers can improve efficiency is by grinding malt for a finer grind.
