How to choose distillation equipment?

How to choose distillation equipment?

Distillation equipment is an important and indispensable piece of equipment in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing industries. Its role is mainly to separate and purify the different components of a liquid mixture through the heating and cooling process. Choosing the right distillation equipment is essential to ensure production efficiency, quality, and safety.

Table of Contents

The basic principle of distillation equipment

The basic principle of distillation is to take advantage of the difference in boiling points of different substances at different temperatures by heating the mixture to make it boil to produce steam, and then condense the steam into liquid through a condenser, thus realizing the process of separating and purifying the target substances. This principle applies to liquid mixtures where the components have different volatility or boiling points.
The basic principle of distillation equipment

Distillation Process

Distillation is a process of separating elements or substances from liquids through a process of boiling and condensation. The boiling points of each element must be different to achieve effective separation. The closer the boiling points of the elements in the liquid, the more complex the distillation process.

Distillation is usually carried out as a batch distillation. There are three essential pieces of distillation equipment required to carry out the process;

  • Reboiler or pot – used to heat the source liquid.
  • Condenser – heated vapor is cooled back to liquid state.
  • Receiver – a device used to collect the concentrate/distillate.

Types of distillation

  1. Simple distillation: When two liquids have different boiling points, we use a simple distillation process. This distillation process is used to separate the liquid from the solid or non-volatile components. Simple distillation involves heating the liquid mixture to boiling point and condensing the vapors formed.
  2. Fractionation: With the help of this distillation process, we can separate the liquids in the mixture that have the same boiling point. In a fractional distillation column, evaporation and condensation steps are required. In this process, when the mixture is heated, the substance with a lower boiling point starts evaporating, condenses the liquid, and separates it. Thereafter, the temperature rises and the boiling points of the components change from low to high boiling points.
  3. Steam distillation: Steam distillation is used to separate the heat-sensitive components of a mixture. To heat it slightly and evaporate a portion of it, we pass steam through the mixture. The vapor formed is condensed and we get the necessary distillate. With the help of this process, we can obtain essential oils and herbal distillates from many aromatic flowers or herbs.
  4. Vacuum Distillation: We have to use a vacuum distillation process to separate the liquids with a high boiling point in the mixture. We do not heat these compounds at high temperatures to make them boil, but the pressure of the surroundings is at its lowest point. Due to low pressure, the ingredients boil at low temperatures.
  5. When the vapor pressure of the composition and the surroundings are equal, it turns into vapors. Then these vapors condense and collect as distillate. We can use this distillation process to obtain highly purified samples of compounds.
  6. Air-sensitive vacuum distillation: Some compounds react when exposed to air. This air-sensitive vacuum distillation process is suitable for compounds that are sensitive to and react with air. However, after the process is complete, we must replace the vacuum with an inert gas.

Common types of distillation equipment

Atmospheric Pressure Distillation Equipment

Atmospheric distillation equipment is the most basic and common type and is suitable for most general liquid mixture separation and purification processes. The principle of operation is based on the difference in boiling points of the different components of a liquid, whereby the mixture is heated to boil to produce a vapor, which is then condensed into a liquid using a cooler. Key features include:

  • Operating pressure: equal to atmospheric pressure, generally at a lower operating temperature.
  • Application areas: widely used in chemical, food processing, alcoholic beverages, and other industries for the extraction and purification of ethanol, water, solvents, and other substances.

Vacuum distillation equipment

Vacuum distillation equipment adds a vacuum system based on atmospheric distillation equipment, which can effectively reduce the boiling point of the liquid, and is especially suitable for dealing with high-boiling point substances or operating at low temperatures. The main features include:

  • Operating pressure: below atmospheric pressure, usually between hundreds of Pa and tens of Pa.
  • Applications: Used to purify high boiling point substances such as certain organic solvents, spices essential oils, polymer compounds, etc. It has a wide range of applications in the fields of pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

Fractionator

A fractional Distillation Tower is a distillation equipment used to process complex multi-component mixtures, which separates the mixtures step by step in the tower using a multi-stage tower plate or packing. Each stage of the tower plate or packing can increase the separation of one boiling point difference, thus improving the separation efficiency. The main features include:

  • Structure: there are several tower plates or packing layers inside, usually in a tower structure.
  • Application: mainly used in the petrochemical industry for distillation and purification process, processing crude oil, refinery products, petrochemicals, and so on.

Membrane distillation equipment

Membrane distillation equipment utilizes semi-permeable membranes for separation. Compared with traditional thermally driven distillation, it usually requires lower operating temperatures and energy consumption and is particularly suitable for processing solutions with high viscosity, high solubility, or temperature sensitivity. Key features include:

  • Working Principle: Utilizing the selective permeability of the membrane, makes different components pass through the membrane at different rates, thus realizing separation.
  • Application areas: mainly used for concentration and removal of impurities in food processing, seawater desalination in water treatment, and purification of solutions in the chemical industry.

Gas separation and distillation equipment

Gas separation and distillation equipment are mainly used for separating components in gaseous mixtures, such as gas separation columns, gas liquefaction fractionation columns, and so on. The principle is to utilize the coalescence property or selective adsorption property of gases at different temperatures for separation.

  • Application areas: mainly used in the separation and purification of industrial gases, such as the preparation and purification process of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and so on.

How to choose the right distillation equipment?

  • Determine the application requirements: First of all, you need to be clear about what your application requirements are, such as what type of liquor you need to process, the required separation purity, the size of your operation, etc. These factors will have a direct impact on choosing the type and size of distillation equipment.
  • Determine processing size and capacity: Determine the processing capacity and capability of the distillation equipment based on the size of the production or laboratory. The capacity of the equipment should be able to meet the volume of liquid to be processed in each batch, taking into account possible future expansion requirements.
  • Determine operating pressure and temperature requirements: Determine the required operating pressure and temperature range based on the characteristics of the material being treated and the process requirements. For example, whether vacuum operation is required to lower the boiling point or to treat high boiling point substances.
  • Consider separation efficiency and purity requirements: Select appropriate distillation equipment based on product purity requirements and separation efficiency. Different types of equipment may differ in separation efficiency and energy consumption and need to be considered comprehensively.
  • Consider material corrosion resistance and operating conditions: According to the chemical nature of the processed liquid and operating conditions, select corrosion-resistant materials to ensure the long-term stable operation and safety of the equipment. Commonly used materials include stainless steel, glass fiber-reinforced plastic, special alloys, and so on.
  • Consider automation and control systems: Modern distillation equipment is usually equipped with advanced automation control systems that can improve operational accuracy and safety. Consider whether the equipment supports automation control, data logging, and remote monitoring features and whether it is adapted to your production or experimental needs.
  • Energy consumption and operating cost considerations: Evaluate the energy consumption of the distillation equipment as well as the long-term operating costs, including energy consumption, maintenance costs, and parts replacement costs. Select equipment that can be operated within an economically reasonable range.
  • Consideration of supplier’s technical support and service: Choose a supplier or manufacturer with good technical support and after-sales service to ensure timely maintenance of the equipment and problem-solving capability to minimize downtime in production.
  • Consider cost and performance comprehensively: Finally, consider the performance characteristics, ease of operation, cost, and other factors of the distillation equipment to choose the most suitable distillation equipment. Not only should we look at the purchase cost of the equipment itself, but also consider its comprehensive benefits in the entire production process.

Summarize

Whether in a laboratory or industrial setting, selecting the right distillation equipment is a critical step in achieving your separation goals. By defining your goals, understanding the basics, considering scale, evaluating distillation types, selecting the right materials and heating methods, and considering efficiency, safety, maintenance, and budget, you can make an informed decision. Only through thorough analysis and comparison can you ensure that your equipment will operate consistently and efficiently during production to achieve the desired separation and purification results.
