What are the common types of beer brewhouse equipment?

The growing popularity of craft beer and microbreweries in recent years has led to a surge in demand for high-quality commercial beer brewing systems. Infusion brewhouse system

The infusion brewhouse system is the simplest and most used type of brewhouse equipment. They relate to the vessel of the mash tun in which the mashing process takes place. The working principle of the soaking mash system involves adding hot water to the malted grain to achieve a specific temperature range for enzyme activity and starch conversion. Temperature is maintained by direct heating methods such as steam jackets or electrical components, or by incorporating a separate heating vessel.

The advantages of a single infusion are many. Using modern malts, almost every beer style in the world can be replicated with a single infusion mash. With software and a little practice, the infusion temperature for any target temperature can be calculated.

RIMS (Circulating Infusion brewhouse System)

A RIMS or recirculating immersion brewing system uses a combination of mash tuns, heating elements, and a recirculation pump. The working principle of the RIMS involves the continuous recirculation of the mash through a heat exchanger where the temperature is controlled. Recirculation ensures uniform heating and enzyme activity for efficient starch conversion. This method allows brewers to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the mashing process.

HERMS (Heat Exchange Recirculation brewhouse System)

HERMS (Heat Exchange Recirculating Mash System) also employs mash tuns, heating elements, and heat exchangers. But, unlike RIMS, HERMS works by transferring the mash to a separate vessel (called a hydrothermal tank) where the heat exchanger is located. The hot liquid tank contains hot water which is circulated through a heat exchanger to maintain the desired mash temperature. This indirect heating method minimizes the risk of grain scorching and allows precise temperature control.

  2. Craft brewery systems: Craft brewery systems are designed for large-scale production, with capacities of up to 100 barrels or more. These systems are often bespoke and can be tailored to the specific needs of the brewery.
  3. Production Brewery Systems: Production brewery systems are designed for the largest scale productions, with capacities of hundreds of barrels or more. These systems are often automated and must significant investment in equipment and infrastructure.
